A joint R&D activity between the Defense Electronics Application Laboratory (DEAL) Defense Research & Development Organization (DRDO) and the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IITRoorkee) has resulted in the development of native radio frequency power amplifiers to meet the futuristic requirements of programmable radios under development. by DEAL, DRDO.
The research group led by Professor Karun Rawat of IIT Roorkee, and a group of scientists and engineers led by Pinaki Sen of DEAL, DRDO designed these amplifiers to be simultaneously capable of meeting high efficiency requirements (for thermal management) and good linearity for signal fidelity.
The designs were simultaneously optimized for size, weight and power (SWaP). These amplifier units have superior performance and outperform many similar products from global manufacturers, achieving high efficiency and gain while simultaneously accounting for good harmonic and intermodulation suppression.
The lack of native components poses a serious challenge to R&D organizations, such as integrating all defense equipment into a given armed forces timeline.
The scientific rigor of an academic R&D has a strong potential to bring innovative designs to support the development of advanced technologies. However, the challenge is to direct this scientific research into product-oriented exercises through collaborative efforts with R&D labs.
The improved efficiency will result in a significant reduction in thermal load, which will facilitate easy integration into the programmable radio chassis in the required form factor.
The unit will be assembled with indigenous radio units from DEAL and DRDO, and will be manufactured by private domestic partners for mass production.

This joint product development activity has proven the synergy between the two organizations and will reinforce the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” dynamic as well as the “Make in India” dynamic for the upgrading of many defense equipment of the Indian Armed Forces.
