Deputy Assistant Secretary for Navy Research, Development, Testing and Engineering visits NSWC Dahlgren Division

On July 22, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development, Testing, and Engineering (RDT&E) under the direction of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development, and Acquisition Joan Johnson spent her morning at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD). Johnson oversees all RTD and E budget activities, science and engineering, advanced research and development, prototyping and experimentation, and test and evaluation, according to the National Defense Industrial Association.

His first stop was a presentation and awards show at the Human Performance Lab (HPL) for the Human Systems Integration (HSI) Division of the Integrated Combat Systems Department.

“The HPL houses a space for design and analysis,” said Anita Kirkland, HSI Division Head. “[The space is a] footprint for the division to build 3D physical models of ship combat systems.

After touring the new facility, Johnson presented the 2021 G. Dennis White Early Career HSI Practitioner Award to HSI Division Engineer Sarah Moore for outstanding leadership in the Surface Electronic Warfare Enhancement Program Factor Analysis Equipment sponsor’s Block III humans (a projection on the side of the ship).

“It’s really amazing to me when you watch this [award] – this is the HSI career start award and look at the achievements [being made] in such a short time in their career – it’s truly mind-blowing,” Johnson said during the presentation. “It makes me feel good. I feel safe going to bed at night because we have amazing professionals here [at Dahlgren].”

After the award presentation, Johnson toured the Optical Dazzling Interdictor, Navy program lab in the Gun and Electric Weapon Systems department.
