Cormier discusses Sappi’s strong commitment to building a better business
Northampton, MA –News Direct– Sappi North America
As the new Vice President of Research, Development and Sustainability, I am very grateful for past efforts that have enhanced our culture of sustainability and the meaningful commitment Sappi demonstrates every day to building a better business.
I am impressed with the relentless nature of our fiber sourcing team to ensure that our purchased fiber comes from sustainably managed forests. I am also pleased with the continued work of our manufacturing sites to make smart business choices that reduce emissions and the willingness to engage our suppliers in their supply chain conversations. As I reflect on our 2020 Sustainability Report, I am proud of the many highlighted achievements and compelling stories that illustrate our commitments. Although we have not achieved all of our 2020 targets, a lot of progress has been made.
With all the challenges the pandemic has brought this year, our commitment to further embed sustainability into our business processes and decisions is not slowing down. Key to this was the passion and drive of our Director of Sustainability, Sandy Taft, who helped build employee and customer engagement in our sustainability efforts. This year, we restructured business process working groups covering fiber and material sourcing, factory operations, logistics and communications. Our Client Council, representing multiple markets, had an equally strong impact this year, providing insightful advice on our goals and initiatives. In September, we hosted a meeting of sustainability ambassadors that showcased the great work being done in each function to support our sustainability goals: advocate and educate. All of these groups are so critical to delivering on our sustainability promises to our employees, customers and communities, and I look forward to our continued work.
At the end of the 2016-2020 five-year period, we set our next set of ambitious Sustainable Development Goals for 2021-2025. These goals continue to focus on people, planet and prosperity, but also expand on this framework by aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). Additionally, Sappi’s global commitment to the Science Based Target (SBTi) initiative accentuates our sustainability goal, and we are excited to further benchmark our progress against these decarbonization goals. Coming from a research and development background, I know and am very excited about the prospects for Sappi to use our innovative spirit and strong skills in renewable resources to provide the market with unique non-fossil solutions.
Finally, in support of the new sustainable development objectives for 2025, we worked with SNA managers to establish sustainable development strategies by business, covering the graphic design, dissolving pulp, packaging and special papers. These strategies outline a strong commitment to the well-being of employees, communities and customers, and I am thrilled to be a part of them.
